  • “Just roll with it.” That was the advice that Dawn Wilking, upper Newburg Middle School English teacher, gave to the graduating class of seniors at Newburg High School Sunday afternoon during their graduation ceremony.
The high school gym was filled with families, friends, teachers, staff and others who attended to send off 34 graduates in style.
Wilking, who was the guest speaker, used lyrics of Steve Winwood’s song “Roll With It,” during her address. She told the seniors not to take the easy road and to not give up when they encounter their first road block.
“Even if you’re going slow, just roll with it. Even if you don’t know where you’re going, just roll with it,” Wilking said. “When life is too much, just roll with it.”
Wilking spoke from personal experience, saying that the mis-steps she encountered in life showed her what didn’t work and strengthened her resolve to get to where she loved to today, which is teaching.
Also speaking during the event were Valedictorian Caitlyn Desireé McKeever and Salutatorian Dylan Reuben Sickler.
In addition to McKeever and Sickler, other honor students were recognized. They are Patience Marie Fitzsimmons, ranked third in her class; Emily Kay Towns, ranked fourth, and Dessa Ann Marie Barton, ranked fifth.
Karlee Nichole Doerr was also recognized for never missing a day of school in her 13 years in the district, from kindergarten to 12th grade.
Additionally, High School Principal Steve Guffey recognized the teachers, parents and other relatives, who he said are all involved in the students’ learning.
Additionally, a slide show featuring the seniors when they were young and what they look like now was shown. The slideshow stated that these students started as “young pups” but are now ready to face the world as “wolves.”
The graduating class also took part in a candle lighting ceremony and later received their diplomas.
Seniors also handed out green and blue daisies to their families and friends.
