  • Earlier this week, the city of Edgar Springs became the eighth city in the state of Missouri to be named a Purple Heart City.
Four members of the Department of Missouri Military Order of the Purple Heart visited Edgar Springs City Hall May 13 during the board of aldermen meeting to present the city with a Purple Heart flag and plaque.
Local veterans turned out for the presentation and shown here with Department of Missouri Military Order of the Purple Heart members.
City Administrator Paula James said she heard about the Purple Heart City program through the Meramec Regional Planning Commission and aldermen passed a proclamation declaring that the city appreciates the veterans for protecting our rights, liberties and freedom.
“We thought it would be a good idea, since we have so many veterans,” James said.
Edgar Springs is the second city in Phelps County to receive this honor.
St. James was the first in the county. According to St. James Mayor Dennis Wilson, the St. James City Council approved the Purple Hearth proclamation at its April 1 meeting and the signing of the proclamation and plaque/flag presentation took place on April 4.
Earlier this year, the cities of St. Robert and Waynesville each individually received the Purple Heart City recognition.
Also neighboring Pulaski County officially became recognized as the first Purple Heart County in the state of Missouri by Purple Heart recipients for its dedication and support.
