  • The anticipated matchup of No. 1 Rolla High School vs. No. 2 Jefferson City Helias in the Missouri Class 2 District 10 Tournament championship game materialized after Tuesday's semifinal games on Kiwanis Field at Rolla High's Bray Sports Complex.
In the semifinal games on Tuesday Rolla pounded fourth-seeded Marshfield 10-0 while Helias shut out third-seeded Bolivar 3-0.
The district title game is set for 6 p.m. today on Kiwanis Field. It will be a rematch of state-ranked teams. Helias, ranked No. 8 in the final regular-season Missouri Class 2 state poll, defeated No. 9-ranked Rolla 3-0 in Jefferson City on May 7 – prior to the most recent state rankings but after the district seeding meeting took place.
So even though Rolla is the higher-seeded squad, the Lady Bulldogs will go into tonight's matchup as the underdog. The Helias Lady Crusaders finished in third place during the 2012 Missouri Class 2 State Tournament.
"Two state-ranked teams meeting in districts is always a tough matchup," said Lady Bulldog head coach Mike Howard, who on Tuesday coached his 1,000th game as RHS soccer head coach (boys and girls combined). "The winner will get Union, another state-ranked team, in the sectional round, so it's going to be a tough road for whichever team advances from this area.
"Even though we are the No. 1 seed, there isn't any pressure on us to win. Helias finished third in the state (last season) and returned a great group of players. Hopefully we will come out relaxed and play well."
On Tuesday Rolla and Helias were never threatened.
    Rolla 10, Marshfield 0
The Lady Bulldogs, now 16-4, scored early and often against outmanned Marshfield, as freshman keeper Katie Hudson recorded her 11th shutout of the season.
Junior Nicole Howard, freshman Emma Laney and sophomore Emily Cates each had two goals for the winners while freshman Sam Turner, senior Mikaela Insall, freshman Brynn Proffitt and sophomore London Clift each had one goal.
Howard had three assists, Cates two and junior Amy Jernigan, freshman Marissa Hill, senior Bailey Dent and freshman Caroline Victor all had one.
    Helias 3, Bolivar 0
Helias bombarded the Bolivar Lady Liberators with 40 shots in running its record to 13-8.
Jordan Poire, Jane McCurren and Becky Roberts scored the goals for the Lady Crusaders.
Liz Czarnecki got credit for the shutout in goal.
