Senior Michael Steelman of the Rolla High School boys' golf team put himself in contention for an all-state finish during Monday's first round of the Missouri Class 4 State Tournament, being held at Rivercut Golf Course.
Only 17 golfers had scores better than the 5-over-par 77 that Steelman shot on Monday. He is among a group of 13 golfers tied for 18th place entering today's final round.
Kearney's Adam Lechner paces the field with 69, two strokes better than runner-up Zac Dittmer of Liberty. Columbia Rock Bridge's Matt Echelmeier and Vianney's Matt Mueller are tied for third with 72.
Rolla's other player in the field, Jake Drewniak, is tied for 78th with 86.
Marquette leads the Class 4 team race with 308 while Timberland is second with 310. Springfield Kickapoo, of the Ozark Conference, is seventh with 323.
In the Class 2 State Tournament, being held at Fremont Hills Country Club in Nixa, Licking's Ian Barnes, of the Frisco League, is tied for third place, just one stroke out of the lead.
Blair Oaks' Tanner Elder and Lutheran St. Peters' Justin Wrozier are tied for first with 3-over-par 74. Barnes and Mt. Vernon's Tripper Jensen are tied for third with 75.
Cuba's Kody Ettinger is tied for fifth place with 76 while Dixon's Josh Parker and Hermann's Austin Ruediger are among eight players tied for 20th with 81. Cuba is from the Gasconade Valley Conference, Dixon from the Frisco League and Hermann from the Four Rivers Conference.
Lutheran St. Peters leads the Class 2 team standings with 317 while Lamar is second with 322.
In the Class 1 State Tournament, being held at Silo Ridge Golf Club in Bolivar, Trevor Cronin of Barat Academy leads the field after one round with 4-over-par 76 while Tarkio's Derek Rohlfsen and McAuley Catholic's Connor Schiegel are tied for second with 77.
Marceline is the Class 1 team leader with 337 while Barat Academy is second at 338.
First-round results from the Class 3 State Tournament, at Sedalia Country Club, were not available as of 8 p.m. Monday night.
