  • With an exceptional rainy spring, Phelps County Commissioners and County Road Superintendent Walter Snelson are reminding residents who live on county roads to keep the culverts under their driveways clean.
During Thursday’s commission meeting, Presiding Commissioner Randy Verkamp noted that Snelson and county highway employees have seen county road damage because of undersized or plugged culverts under driveways, private entrances or on private drives.
The minimum diameter of a culvert allowed is 15 inches, it was noted, but residents are encouraged to call the county highway department at 573-426-3864 so that the department can inspect the site and recommend a proper-sized culvert.
In other business or discussion at Thursday’s commission meeting, District Two Commissioner Larry Stratman recommended that the county apply for a Delta Regional Authority (DRA) grant for a north outer road north of Interstate 44 between U.S. Highway 63 and State Route V.
Commissioners also approved a summer food service inspection program, in which each initial inspection report received by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services is reimbursed to the county at a rate of $90 each.
The commission also discussed replacing windows at the courthouse.
