Arriving in lower Manhattan on Sept. 11, 2001, soon after the collapse of the South Tower, the Rev. Wrede stood four blocks from the site of the World Trade Center offering pastoral care to people standing in the streets. After the collapse of the North Tower, he stood at the site blessing first responders as they entered the site.
During the month of November 2001, chaplain Wrede served at Respite South (a “rest area” for on-site workers) and from December 2001 through June 2002, he served as a chaplain at the on-site morgue where he provided spiritual care to emergency medical and law enforcement personnel.
The Rev. Wrede will share his experiences on Sept. 11 and the opportunities he had to share the gospel in the midst of chaos.
The Rev. Wrede is a native of Michigan and has served the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod in many capacities. He was ordained as a minister in 2000 and was called to serve as the Mission Field Developer for Deaf Ministry in New York City.
He has been an interpreter for the deaf and studied American Sign Language. His parish was three blocks from Ground Zero at the time of the attack. He is currently serving as the Director of Admissions at Concordia Lutheran Seminary in St. Louis.
