  • A railroad crossing on Country Club Road (County Road 3110) will get an upgrade hopefully by late this fall.
Representatives with the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) and Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railroad performed a diagnostic Monday, May 6, of the rail crossing located between County Roads 3120 and 3100.
Representing MoDOT were Richard Allsbury and Jack Wright, both with MoDOT’s rail department and representing BNSF was Cheryl Townlian.
Phelps County Presiding Commissioner Randy Verkamp and District One Commissioner Larry Stratman along with County Road Superintendent Walter Snelson also were at the site.
The upgrade will be funded by a cost-share between MoDOT and BNSF. There will be no cost to Phelps County except for placing a railroad crossing warning sign on Country Club Road on the south side of the tracks. An agreement will be signed by all three entities before work proceeds.
New arms in front of the crossing on both sides will be added that will also stop traffic turning southbound from County Road 3120.
Townlian said the railroad company and MoDOT are given about a year from the time a diagnostic occurs to the time of installation, but said a crossing project like this could be completed in 180 days. She said the upgrades at this crossing could be installed by late fall.
Currently, the crossing only has flashing lights to warn motorists of approaching trains, but no crossing arms to stop traffic from going across.
The amount of vehicular traffic on the road and the amount of train traffic as well as the speed of both locomotives and vehicles plus visibility are all taken into account when deciding if a crossing needs upgrades or not.
At the commission’s April 30 meeting, Verkamp called the crossing “one of the busiest crossings in the county.”
