The Missouri S&T baseball team rode a complete game, six-hit by John Auble to a berth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Tournament Sunday, as the Miners took the opening game of the four-game series at Rockhurst University by the score of 5-0.
The Hawks got a split of the doubleheader by winning the second game 4-1, ending S&T's season-high seven-game winning streak.
S&T was 22-23 overall and 20-14 in the GLVC heading into another doubleheader against Rockhurst yesterday. Rockhurst was 18-25 and 13-21.
Auble had only one run to work with for a majority of the contest – a run the Miners tallied in the third – but the Miners broke the game open with runs in the eighth and ninth innings.
In the third, the Miners got hits from Reed Brown and Michael Lockett to open the inning, then after both runners were sacrificed over by Will Morrison, Lance Portwood brought home Brown as he reached on an error.
The Hawks left two runners on base in the third, fourth and fifth innings, with runners on second and third in the fifth before Auble got Patrick Chandler to line out to end the threat. Auble also got a double play to get out of the sixth and picked a runner off in the seventh to end that inning.
S&T got him a cushion in the eighth as Colin Coan walked with one out and Kyle Rich reached on an infield hit. After a double steal put the runners on second and third, Michael Boxell got an infield hit to score Coan. Brown followed with an RBI ground out to extend the lead to 3-0.
Coan added a two-run double in the ninth to push the lead to five and Auble finished things off by pitching around a two-out double to complete the shutout.
He allowed only six hits and struck out seven – including five of the first eight batters he faced – to improve to 5-4 on the year. The Miners outhit the Hawks 13-6 with Sam Adams collecting three hits for S&T.
In the second game, the Hawks scored twice in the opening inning against S&T starter Chris Bowe, the first scoring on Chandler's RBI single and the other on a one-out single by Tyler Gans.
The Miners had two runners on base in each of the first two innings but couldn't push a run across on either occasion. In the fifth, S&T loaded the bases with two outs but wasn't able to score.
Rockhurst added to its lead in the bottom of the fifth on Nick Lichtenberger's two-run double with two outs.
S&T got on the scoreboard in the sixth after Clint Wobbe was hit by a pitch with one out and Coan drew a two-out walk. A hit by Boxell loaded the bases and Brown followed with an opposite field single to score Wobbe.
