Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri President and CEO Paula Gianino released the following statement in response to today’s decision by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on emergency contraception, also known as the morning after pill:

“This is an important step forward in expanding access to emergency contraception to prevent unintended pregnancy. While there are still issues to resolve, this decision will eliminate some of the biggest obstructions women face in getting emergency contraception when they need it, which means greater prevention of unintended pregnancies in Missouri and Illinois.”

“While we fully support this expansion of access to birth control, we continue to believe that the administration should lift all unnecessary restrictions to emergency contraception consistent with the prevailing science and medicine. As a community leader in women’s health care, Planned Parenthood knows firsthand how critical it is for women to have access to emergency contraception quickly and without hurdles.”
