  • Solar plane to make stop in St. Louis

    • email print
  • A solar-powered plane making its initial cross-country voyage in May will make a stop in St. Louis.

The Solar Impulse is scheduled to take off sometime in May, depending on the weather. It will fly from San Francisco to John F. Kennedy Airport in New York, making four stops in between. St. Louis leaders announced Tuesday that Lambert Airport will be one of those stops.

The Solar Impulse — with the wingspan of a Boeing 747 but the weight of a car — is powered by about 12,000 photovoltaic cells that charge its batteries, allowing it to fly day and night without jet fuel.

It is designed to showcase the potential of solar power. The single-seat plane cruises around 40 mph and can't fly through clouds or bad weather.
