Missouri S&T's women's track & field team had a big afternoon in its final tune-up before next weekend's Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Championships, winning six events and capturing the team championship at the Illinois College True Blue Classic Saturday afternoon.
Mary Ann Bradshaw won two events Saturday, winning the long jump competition with a mark of 16-10 and the 400-meter hurdles in 1:05.87. In addition, Samantha Wermager captured first in the triple jump as she posted a leap of 35-0½, Kelly Kosmopolis won the high jump with a clearance of 5-1 and Alyson Smith took the 1,500-meter title with a time of 4:55.33.
The Lady Miners' 4x100-meter relay team of Katlyn Meier, Taylor Cipicchio, Rachel Lawal and Bradshaw won that event with a seasonal-best time of 49.30 seconds.
Cipicchio also finished second in the pole vault with a clearance of 10-11¾, as four Lady Miners finished from second through fifth in the event. Molly Clement and Rachel Ederle also cleared that height to finish third and fourth, respectively, while Sydnee Schram was fifth at 10-6.
Wermager added a second place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.14 seconds in the finals and Meier took second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.69 seconds and in the 400-hurdles in 1:07.60. Bradshaw finished right behind Meier in the 100 in 12.75 seconds after posting the fastest time in the preliminaries of 12.69.
S&T got third place showings from Sadye Wichmann in the long jump with a mark of 15-8¼ and in the triple jump at 33-3¼, Lawal in the 400-meters with a season-best time of 59.91 seconds, Natalie Updyke in the 800-meters in 2:21.77 and Wermager in the 400-hurdles in 1:08.61. Brenda Ellis finished fifth in the 1,500-meters in 5:12.03 and Rachel Feist came in sixth in 5:15.02.
Schram finished seventh in the javelin with a throw of 92-1, while Mindy Lake placed ninth in the 5,000-meters in 19:20.82, while Christine Schmid and Lisa Lake had 10th place showings, Schmid in the hammer throw with a mark of 121 feet and Lake in the 5,000 in 19:32.86.
The S&T men's team had 13 finishes among the top eight in various events Saturday as it competed in its final meet at the Illinois College True Blue Classic.
Kyle Stocker had the highest finish among the Miners as he placed second in the 1,500-meters in a time of 4:03.40. S&T got a third place performance from Joseph Vellella in the hammer throw with a mark of 175-6 – which was past the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark for the second week in a row – and in the discus with a throw of 143-5.
Danny Deposki had a third place finish in the 5,000-meters in 15:34.14, while Tim Sills placed third in the pole vault with a clearance of 13-9¾, the same height cleared by David Jones-Richerson to finish fourth based on misses.
Page 2 of 2 - Robert Naeger and Brian Scherping finished in a tie for fourth in the 800-meters as both runners crossed the line in 2:00.09, while Nathan Vandomelen was fifth in the 400-meter hurdles in 58.54 seconds and Godson Onwubiko took sixth in the discus with a mark of 139-10.
The Miners got a seventh place showing from Chris Marchman in the 1,500-meters in 4:10.81 and from Stephen Mull in the shot put with a mark of 43-1, one spot ahead of teammate Reece Berry's mark of 42-10¼.
S&T will begin competition at the GLVC Outdoor Championships Friday at Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill.
