Wilda Beamon, of St. James, was named Senior Companion of the Month during the monthly in-service meeting held April 19 at the Phelps County Courthouse in the Sky Room. The Senior Companions each received a gift from Rolla Manor Care Center.
As a Senior Companion, Beamon works in private homes in the St. James Area listening to residents talk about their lives, providing respite for caregivers, assisting with errands, appointments, and activities.
Beamon grew up with 13 brothers and sisters around Pacific; she worked as a cook in schools and nursing homes. Beamon enjoys flower gardens, shopping, reading and spending time with her husband, six children and 19 grandchildren. As a Senior Companion since 2002 she has enjoyed volunteering and being of service to help the seniors in our community.
As the Senior Companion of the month of April, Beamon received a floral arrangement donated by Blossom Basket Florist, and the recognition of her fellow Senior Companions during the meeting.
There are more than 70 senior citizen volunteers serving as Senior Companions all over Phelps County in private homes, providing respite for caregivers, residential care facilities, and skilled nursing facilities. Sponsored by the Phelps County Commission, the Corporation for National and Community Service, as well as several local groups and individuals, Senior Companions’ help their peers maintain the independence they have worked for all their lives, and assist caregivers by providing Respite.
