Unexpected home-field advantage lifts Lebanon past Rolla baseball.
It was a home game that became a road game. And it ended up a tough, last-inning Ozark Conference defeat for the Rolla High School baseball team Friday night.
The RHS Bulldogs were scheduled to open their conference schedule March 25 by hosting Lebanon, however, that game was pushed to Friday due to the weather. When Friday came Rolla's home field was still not playable, so the game was moved to Lebanon, with the Yellow Jackets becoming the home team and Rolla getting the nod next season.
And the Jackets used that home-field advantage to pull out the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning after a pair of walks and a Rolla error, clipping the Bulldogs 3-2.
RHS improved to 4-3 overall by beating Iberia 4-1 in non-league play last night on the FCNB Field at the Bray Sports Complex. Results from that contest will be reported in Wednesday's edition of the Daily News.
On Friday Lebanon jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
However, the Bulldogs plated two runs in the top of the second frame, as senior Hayden Nielsen and junior Bryan Peach both walked ahead of sophomore Andy Satulla's single. Both Nielsen and Peach scored on a ball hit by senior Zach Lewis, which went for a fielder's choice and an error as Lebanon threw away a double-play attempt.
RHS kept the lead until the bottom of the fifth, when Lebanon used another RHS error to score a run and tie things up 2-2.
Lebanon then got the win in the seventh. Lebanon's C.D. Honey drew a one-out walk followed by a single up the middle by Dylan Bradshaw.
Honey advanced to third on an RHS error. After RHS intentionally walked Lebanon's Tyler Bare, the Jackets' Josh Archer lifted a fly ball to center, scoring the winning run.
Rolla junior right-hander Seth Stevens was the hard-luck losing pitcher for Rolla, working all seven innings and allowing five hits.
Junior Austin Knight, now 3-0, also went the distance on the mound to gain the victory for Lebanon, scattering five hits, walking four and fanning eight.
Rolla won the junior varsity game 3-1. Sophomore Dalton Turner was the winning pitcher for the RHS jayvee squad.
The Bulldogs are scheduled to play at Springfield today against Kickapoo, with the varsity game to begin at 4:30 p.m. and the jayvee contest to follow.
