  • Career Opportunities and Employer Relations (COER) at Missouri University of Science and Technology sponsors an Extreme Makeover: Career Edition contest each year.

To enter the contest, students must write a 200- to 500-word essay explaining why they (or someone they know) are deserving of a makeover. The essays are judged by several COER team members and two students (one male and one female) are chosen to receive the “makeover of their career!”
This year’s Extreme Makeover: Career Edition winners are: Monica Folk, Senior in Mechanical Engineering (female winner), and Valentine Mbah, Junior in Computer Engineering (male winner).
Monica has been involved with several different organizations while studying at Missouri S&T. In her essay, Monica wrote, “I’ve noticed a trend of doing things for others in most of the activities I do.” Although comfortable helping others, Monica was hesitant to ask for assistance with her own needs. Specifically, Monica lacked confidence in her ability to communicate effectively with employers.

A COER Career Adviser helped Monica develop an effective introduction and coached her on interviewing skills. Monica also needed to feel confident in her appearance.

Thanks to the generous donations of teeth whitening from Forum Dental, and the new hair style, makeup and manicure she received from Kristin Hunter, Traci La Firenza and Kayla McMurry of Benton Square Salon and Spa, Monica got the boost she needed and made a great impression at the Missouri S&T Spring Career Fair.
As the female winner of the Extreme Makeover: Career Edition contest, Monica received the following gifts and services:

    • Résumé review, practice interview and power introduction preparation from a COER Career Adviser.
Valentine, a young man born in Nigeria, wrote in his essay that “diligence, smart thinking and perseverance help propel one over any hurdles that life offers.” One of Valentine’s specific hurdles is his size. Standing 6 feet, 8 inches tall, with a 40-inch arm span and a slender build, makes finding affordably-priced dress clothes, that fit properly, an extremely difficult task.

Thanks to store manager Cheryl Gillibrand-DeClue, and the staff at JC Penney in Rolla, Valentine was given a custom suit fitting, new dress clothes, and shoes. Valentine was extremely happy with his new look, which helped him make a great impression with employers at the Missouri S&T Spring Career Fair  Feb. 19, 2013.
As the male winner of the Extreme Makeover: Career Edition contest, Valentine received the following gifts and services:
    • Custom fitting of new business suit and shoes, courtesy of JC Penney of Rolla
    • Teeth whitening, courtesy of Forum Dental
    • Hair styling, courtesy of Lonnell Jones, Senior in Business and Management Systems at Missouri S&T
    • Personalized business cards, courtesy of Scotts Printing
    • Missouri S&T Logo Portfolio, courtesy of Missouri S&T Bookstore, and
    • Résumé review, practice interview and power introduction preparation from a COER Career Adviser.
Career Opportunities and Employer Relations (COER) would like to thank all of our Extreme Makeover: Career Edition sponsors.  Without their generous donations, Valentine and Monica would not have received the assistance they needed to be prepared for their job search or for making a great impression in their new careers.
