Earl Pilger, a long-time St. James resident, was named Senior Companion of the Month during the monthly in-service meeting held March 20, 2013, at the Phelps County Courthouse in Rolla. As a Senior Companion, Pilger works at the Missouri Veterans Home where he listens to residents talk about their lives assists with playing games, mealtimes, and field trips.
Pilger grew up in St Louis and St James. He worked as a federal employee retiring after 31 years.
After retirement, Pilger worked at the St James Tourist Center, and Golf course. He enjoys attending school ball games, yard work, and spending time with his two children, and four grandchildren. Pilger drove as a volunteer van driver for the Senior Companion Program. He enjoys being of service to the community.
As the Senior Companion of the month of March, Pilger received a floral arrangement donated by Blossom Basket Florist, and the recognition of his fellow Senior Companions during the meeting.
Also during the meeting, Buz Harvey, member of the 911 board, spoke to the group about the 911 board and its benefits.
There are more than 70 senior citizen volunteers serving as Senior Companions all over Phelps County in private homes, residential care facilities, and skilled nursing facilities. Sponsored by the Phelps County Commission, the Corporation for National and Community Service, as well as several local groups and individuals, Senior Companions’ greatest work is to help their peers maintain the independence they have worked for all their lives.
