An updated Public Transit-Human Service Transportation Coordination Plan for the Meramec region was recently completed and approved by both the Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC) and the board of the Meramec Regional Planning Commission (MRPC).
The plan, originally drafted in 2008, identifies public transit needs in the region and outlines strategies to fill those needs. MRPC was contracted through the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) to update the plan in 2012.
The largest change to the plan is the addition of a need for a mobility manager who would coordinate public transportation efforts. This change came out of a series of working group discussions among public transit users, potential users and providers as well as other service providers who share clientele with public transit providers, such as independent living facilities.
In response to this newly identified need, MRPC sought and recently received a Missouri Developmental Disabilities Council planning grant to assist in developing such a position.
According to MRPC Community Development Specialist Lyle Thomas, the $20,000 planning grant will be used to explore the formation of a permanent mobility management position, define the functions of that position and identify ways to fund such a position.
