The Rolla High School varsity soccer team proved that it was going to take a lot more than a little to keep them off the field.

The girls spent Friday morning shovelling the field by hand before taking the pitch later that night against Washington in the first game of the Rolla Girls Soccer Classic, sponsored by Phelps County Bank.

“I would like to thank the girls for coming out and preparing the field on their first day of spring break,” said Rolla coach Mike Howard. “If they hadn't, we would not have played one game much less the entire tournament.”

Nicole Howard scored 14 minutes into the first game of the night Friday. That score stood until halftime.

The Washington Blue Jays came from behind for the win, with two goals from Halee Nurnburger at the 54 and 59 minute marks.

“I take the blame for the Washington game,” said Howard.

“We weren't really prepared to play and we didn't the right people in the right positions. We got better every game of the tournament.”

The Springfield Catholic Lady Irish came out on top in the second game of the night, scoring a goal over the Northwest Lady Lions with nine minutes left for the win.
