  • Growing Green Education Fair is set for Saturday, April 13 at First Baptist Church's Ministry Center, 10th and Cedar Streets, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine.

    The free fair is sponsored by Phelps County Master Gardeners and is designed to demonstrate how to garden in ecological and sustainable ways.

    "We want to see everyone getting outside and into gardens," said Growing Green Education Fair Committee Chairman Joyce Schaefferkoetter. "With our changing climate, we know we all have to garden in new, creative ways."

    Guest speakers will give half hour presentations starting at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., rotating every half hour:

    Pat Guinan, assistant professor Climatology and Atmospheric Science, University of Missouri Cole County Extension, will discuss Missouri's changing climate;
    Norman Kilmer, owner of Morgan County Seeds, LLC, will demonstrate how to install drip irrigation;
    Patrick Greenwald, University of Missouri Phelps County Extension-East Central Region horticulture specialist, will give an overview on soils, and
    Advanced Phelps County Master Gardeners Ina Bicknell and Charlotte Wiggins will discuss the role of bees and other pollinators in gardens.

    In addition, a variety of interactive exhibits will offer information from beekeeping to vermi-composting, or composting with worms.

    Interested gardeners will also have the opportunity to buy vegetable starts, annual seedlings and perennials to jump start the planting seasons.

    "Master gardeners from around the region attending the education fair will be able to get credit to meet their annual education certification requirements," according to Greenwald.

    Fair goers who participate in a survey will be entered in hourly drawings for garden-related gifts.

    "Thanks to our corporate sponsors who are making this fair possible," said Schaefferkoetter.

    Sponsors include Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds; Bluebird Gardens Quilts and Gifts; Brewer Science; George O. White Nursery; Phelps County Bank; Rolla Lowes; Town and Country Bank and Walmart Rolla.

    Special thanks to Panera Bread, Pepsi and Subway.
