  • Phelps County sees slight population dip from 2010-12

  • The population of Phelps County dropped by almost 170 people from 2010 to 2012, according to new data released for counties by the U.S. Census Bureau Thursday

  • The population of Phelps County dropped by almost 170 people from 2010 to 2012, according to new data released for counties by the U.S. Census Bureau Thursday.
     
    The figures, which are only estimates and subject to revision, show that the county’s estimated population in 2012 was 44,987 compared to a base estimate of 45,156 as of April 1, 2010.
     
    That’s a difference of 169 people or a 0.4 percent decrease from April 1, 2010 to July 1, 2012.
     
    In comparison to surrounding counties, the new data shows the 2012 estimated population in Maries County was 9,014. That is a 1.7 percent decrease from the population estimate of 9,173 as of April 1, 2010.
     
    All of the counties surrounding Phelps County, Pulaski County saw the biggest increase in population from 2010 to 2012. The 2012 estimated population of Pulaski County was 53,259. The county’s population was estimated at 52,277 as of April 1, 2010. That is an increase of 1.9 percent from April 1, 2010 to July 1, 2012.
     
    In Texas County, the estimated population in 2012 was 25,810 compared to the estimate of 26,008 as of April 1, 2010. Between April 1, 2010 and July 1, 2012, that comes out to a 0.8 percent decrease in population.
     
    According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 10 people left Dent County between 2010 and 2012. The county’s 2012 estimated population was 15,647 compared to the estimated population of 15,657 as of April 1, 2010. The difference is a 0.1 percent decrease from April 1, 2010 to July 1, 2012.
     
    Crawford County saw slight growth in that same time frame. Crawford County’s estimated population in 2012 was 24,832. The estimated population as of April 1, 2010, was 24,696. That translates to a 0.6 percent increase between April 1, 2010 and July 1, 2012.
     
    In Gasconade County, the estimated population in 2012 was 14,972 compared to the estimate of 15,221 as of April 1, 2010. Between April 1, 2010 and July 1, 2012, that comes out to a 1.6 percent decrease in population.
     
    During this same time frame, Missouri’s entire state population rose by 0.6 percent from 5,988,924 to 6,021,988.
