  • Our beloved Shirley Rae Baxter, of Rolla, passed away Thursday, February 21, 2013 at the age of 84.

She was born in the quaint town of Joliet, Illinois on May 26, 1928 to Howard E. Lundberg and Arlene I. A. (Anderson) Lundberg.

Shirley attended the University of Illinois and completed her degree in Occupational Therapy. She was involved in the arts and music and serving the community with Job’s Daughters. At university, she fell in love with another Illinoisan, George B. Baxter and on March 2, 1952 they married.

Stationed with George throughout the US, she continued to pursue her passions and became the mother of three children. In 1970, the Baxter family moved to Rolla, MO and Shirley fully dedicated her life to Jesus Christ as her Savior and Friend. The lyrics of one of her favorite songs, “In the Garden”, paints the perfect picture, “And He walks with me and He talks with me, and He tells me I am His own. And the Joy we share as we tarry there, none other has ever known.”

She never fell short of lavishing love on her grandchildren. She and George drove to attend their grandchildren’s events from Kansas to Iowa to Tennessee to South Dakota. They also traveled all over the US to spend time with relatives and friends. Her favorite vacations with George were their trips to historic Williamsburg, VA.

Throughout the 40+ years Shirley lived in Rolla, she poured her heart into her family, friends, community and the First Baptist Church of Rolla. She supported her children in their passions and activities, volunteered at the Cerebral Palsy School, visited shut-ins, taught VBS, and loved kids at KKCF. She particularly loved ministering with George to international students from Nigeria, Taiwan, and all over the world. However, Shirley excelled most at caring for her husband.

Now she will celebrate her anniversary with George in heaven and together they celebrate their marriage to Christ. She will be deeply missed. Her surviving family includes her children; Chrys (Baxter) Pihl of Pittsburg, KS, Terry Baxter and his wife Karen, of Las Vegas, NV, Pamela Baxter of Dayton, OH; four grandchildren, Heather Baxter, Travis Baxter, Crystal Pihl, and Christian Pihl; brother, Lloyd Lundberg and wife Jean, of Downers Grove, IL; sister, Charlene Fausel and husband John, of Northbrook, IL; nieces, nephews, other extended family members and many, many dear friends.

A funeral service for Shirley Baxter will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in Rolla. Rev. Bob Johnston will officiate. Interment will follow at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 4, 2013 at the Ft. Leonard Wood Veteran’s Cemetery in Waynesville, MO. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, March 1, 2013 at the Null and Son Funeral Home in Rolla.
