When Shelby Ridenhour began to narrow down her college options, it became apparent that she was probably going to be competing in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC).
And that will, indeed, be the case.
Ridenhour, an all-state sprinter for the St. James High School girls' cross country team, has decided to attend and run track at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo.
Ridenhour expects to run open sprint events, sprint relays and perhaps some jumping events for the William Jewell Cardinals.
Before deciding upon William Jewell, Ridenhour had also considered Maryville University, Saint Joseph's and Central Methodist.
William Jewell, Maryville and Saint Joseph's are all members of the GLVC, as is the university in Ridenhour's county – Missouri S&T.
"They have a really good school and I really like the coaches," Ridenhour said of William Jewell. "And I really got along with all the kids there.
"That was the picture in my head I had imagined a college should be like."
She said she will enter school undecided on a major, although she is leaning towards psychology.
Ridenhour earned all-state honors by placing seventh in the finals of the 100-meter dash at the Missouri Class 3 State Championships last season, running a time of :12.79 in the prelims.
She was also a near-state qualifier in the triple jump, and may compete in the horizontal jumps at William Jewell as well.
She says she has lots to improve on the track before heading to Liberty.
"I think my starts will be my weakest point now," she said. "And if I decide to do jumpers I'll have to work a lot on that. And my endurance has got to improve, too."
