Irene E. Hancock of St. James, Missouri passed away Wednesday, February 20, 2013 peacefully at her home. Irene was born July 19, 1924 in Vichy, Missouri to the late Perry and Oma (Daniels) Gray.
Irene was united in marriage to C.C. (Ted) Hancock on April 19, 1944 and to this union six children were born.
Irene was an extremely hard worker, she worked at the Missouri Veterans Home for 33 years. Not only did she work outside of the home, but was so lovingly devoted to her husband, family, friends, and neighbors. Irene loved to sew, cook and garden. She always had such a wonderful big garden and proudly shared the bounty of her garden with her family, friends, and neighbors. What Irene didn't share was always canned and brought out in the cold winter months, nothing ever went to waste.
Irene E. Hancock is survived by her children, Jenny Wehmeyer and husband Bernie, of St. James, MO; Vernita Morris, of St. James, MO; Velmer Hancock and wife Barbara, of St. James, MO; Vernon Hancock, of Rolla, MO; Vera Smith and husband Phil, of Gonzales, LA; Venton (Bimbo) Hancock, of Denham Springs, LA. Brothers, Donald Gray and wife Ginny, of IL; Doyle Gray and wife Leona, of Vichy, MO. Sister, Christine Wagner, of Sappington, MO. Several grandchildren, great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends. In addition to her parents Irene was preceded in death by her husband C.C. (Ted) Hancock; brothers, Ed and Paul Gray; sisters, Ruby Wilson, Della Hill, and three infant sisters.
Funeral services for Irene E. Hancock will be held Saturday, February 23, 2013 at the St. James Chapel of the James & Gahr Mortuary with Pastor Gary Lane officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be held prior to the service from 10:00 AM until service time at 1:00 PM. Interment will be at the Hancock Family Cemetery on the family farm, with Chris Hancock, Toby Iten, Shannon Laney, Nathan Moreland, Ted Hancock, Josh Hancock, Brent Hancock, Tim Iten and Dusty Hancock serving as pallbearers. Music will be provided by Hal and Connie Rhea. Memorials are suggested in lieu of flowers to the Phelps County Hospice, cards are available at all James & Gahr locations.
