  • Troop I, of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, which covers Phelps and five other south central Missouri counties, reported zero traffic fatalities during the month of January. This is the two fewer than January 2012.

    There were 137 crashes reported in the Troop I area last month with 47 injured. That compares to 157 crashes in January 2012 and 47 injured.

    In Phelps County, there were 32 crashes and 10 injured last month.

    The number of crashes and injuries reported in the five other counties in Troop I is as follows:
    Crawford County — 19 crashes, 10 injured;
    Dent County — 14 crashes, two injured;
    Laclede County — 27 crashes, 10 injured;
    Maries County — Six crashes, one injured;
    Pulaski County — 39 crashes, 14 injured;

    Capt. Lee Ann H. Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, wants to remind parents and caretakers in that all children should be placed in a child safety seat or booster seat or wear a seat belt every time they ride in a car or truck.

    When placing a child safety seat or booster seat in a vehicle, be sure to read both the seat instructions and the vehicle owner’s manual. It is recommended that infants be placed in a rear-facing seat for as long as possible or until they are at least 1 year old and 20 pounds and that children at least 1 year old between 20 and 40 pounds should be placed in forward-facing safety seats.

    Kenley also reminds everyone that Missouri law states that children ages 4 to 8, who weigh between 40 and 80 pounds, and who are less than 4 feet, 9 inches tall, must be secured in a child passenger restraint seat or a booster seat appropriate for that child.

    Seat belts alone are designed for adults or children over 80 pounds. Another safety reminder is that all children 12 or under should sit in the back seat.
