At the Thursday night meeting of the Rolla Board of Education, Assistant Superintendent Kelly Hinshaw and district architect Mark Reuther, of Hoener Associates Inc., discussed capital projects in the works.

Budgeted estimate for the base bid and two alternates for the high school cafeteria renovation is $900,000 to $1.1 million.

The plan is to “update and expand the cafeteria facility to serve students more efficiently while addressing supervision and safety concerns,” according to documents shared with the board.

Seating for almost 100 more students in a 3,500 square-foot addition is the base bid, along with an enclosure for the trash/recycling area.

An alternate bid is for a 1,600 square-foot scramble area for the students to buy lunch without going through a long line.

Another alternate bid is for a screen on mechanical equipment across the parking lot on the southeast corner of the building.

A pre-bid meeting with contractors is set for 9 a.m. Feb. 28 at Rolla High School. Bids are due at 2 p.m. March 12 in time for a decision at the March 14 board meeting.

Construction would begin at the end of May and be completed the first week of August.

Because of the construction project, summer school will likely be held at Rolla Junior High for High School students.

Also discussed was a plan to control access at Truman Elementary School. A live video feed and wireless entry alert have already been installed. Next phase will require remodeling of the main office entrance and county, along with the exterior vestibule.

No action was taken Thursday night in the long-range discussion.

Hinshaw reminded board members that the bid documents for the Lions Memorial Stadium project, which includes synthetic turf for the football field, went out Feb. 4. A pre-bid meeting is set for 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, with bids due at 2 p.m. Feb. 25.

The board will make a decision on Feb. 28 or March 14 after they see the figures. Construction could begin May 1 and be completed by July 1.

In related action, the fee schedule for Hoener Associates Inc., the architectural firm the district uses for construction projects, was approved.

For renovations, alterations and remodeling projects, the firm will be paid from 6.15 percent to 9.00 percent of the project, the lower percentage for projects $3,000,001 and over and the higher percentage for projects $300,000 to $500,000.

On new construction, the percentages will be from 8 percent for projects $400,000 to $500,000 and 5.30 percent for projects $6,000,001 and over.

In other business or discussion:

The board watched the monthly video stream from the Missouri School Boards Association. Topics this month included the state budget for education, lengthening of the school year and creation of a low-interest loan program fro school construction.

Board member Keith Strassner, current MSBA Region 12 leadership development chairman, was renominated for the post.

Rolla Public Schools administrators and staff members will make presentations on My Big Campus, a computer networking program, and the student advisor position on the board at the MSBA Fall Conference Oct. 8-9. The presentation on the student advisor position will be conducted along with Gasconade R-1 School District, which used Rolla as a model. Iqua Choudhry is the student representative this year.
