  • Melba Nadene (Rider) Toman, 88, slipped into a peaceful sleep January 31, 2013 at her home in Salem, MO with family members by her side.
Melba was born in Nevada, Missouri to Claud and Lova (Swift) Rider on September 2, 1924 and attended the Black Oak School in Lenox, and Licking High School. On January 11, 1946 Melba married Merlin Chester Toman in Rogers, Arkansas and made Montrose, Colorado their home. Melba and her husband owned and operated the Nu-Isis Restaurant and Toman’s Furniture Centers in Colorado. Following the death of her husband, Melba resided in Salem where she earned her Real-estate’s license and worked until retiring in 1984.
Melba was an avid reader and loved to travel, going to Hawaii, Aruba, Alaska, and Mexico to name a few. She was a longtime baptized member in good standing of the Jehovah’s Witnesses and relished meeting people, both young and old to share and discuss scriptures from the Bible. Melba never met an enemy and only saw the good in people. She strived to use the fruitages of God’s Spirit found in Galatians 5:22, 23 in her life, which are “love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faith, mildness, and self-control” (New World Translation).
Melba will be especially remembered for her kind and unselfish nature. Whether you were a family member, friend, neighbor, or stranger, Melba made your day happy and full and would give help to any she could. She also enjoyed playing cards and scrabble with her grandchildren and she made a fierce competitor. She loved music and songs and on occasion would dance with each of her loved ones. She was fond of the quote, “dance like no one is watching.”
Melba will be devotedly remembered by her siblings, Inez Wilson of Salem, Thomas Edward Rider of O’Fallon, and Clyde Neil Rider of Salem; Her beloved children, M.C. Toman and wife Etta, of Salem, Paula and husband Bud Keltz, of Montrose, CO; Linda Hunter of Salem; Inez Helene, and husband Jack Charlton, Montrose, CO; Rhonda and husband Michael Schack of Rolla; Karene Toman of Fulton; Karla Jones of New Brunswick, Sharma and husband Alan Bush of Cortez, CO; and Eugenia and husband Joe Boze of Rolla; and Melba’s treasured 27 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren and many very special nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Following cremation, a private family service was held Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking with Clarence Halbrook, officiating.
