  • Black History Month events scheduled at S&T

  • Missouri University of Science and Technology will celebrate Black History Month in February with the theme “Reclaiming Our Identity.”
     
    A kickoff was held Monday in the Havener Center on campus.
     
    The following events are planned:
     
    On Wednesday, Feb. 6, a free film “Coming to America” will be shown from 7-9 p.m. in Room 199 of Toomey Hall.
    Refreshments will be provided. This showing is sponsored by the National Society of Black Engineers.
     
    On Thursday, Feb. 7, free confidential STD testing will be available from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Havener Center atrium. Email Offie Adams at olaqkc@mst.edu for more information.
     
    A presentation called “Emancipation Proclamation: 150 Years Later, How Far Have We Come?” will take place from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, in the Meramec-Gasconade Room of the Havener Center.
     
    Guest speaker Dr. Illya Davis, of Clark Atlanta University, will explore the events surrounding the Emancipation Proclamation and participate in a discussion about today’s cultural climate. Free pizza will be provided at this event.
     
    On Friday, Feb. 22, the university’s student diversity, women’s and outreach programs will sponsor a Black History Month Celebration at 7 p.m. in the Leach Theatre of Castleman Hall.
     
    This free night of entertainment highlighting the artistic talents of the S&T community will feature a keynote address by LaWanda Jones, a 1991 civil engineering graduate of University of Missouri-Rolla (now Missouri S&T) and corporate marketing manager for ABNA Engineering.
     
    “Gems in STEM — How Women of Color are Changing the 'Face' of STEM” will be held from 6-7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, in the Southwestern Bell Cultural Center. The event, also sponsored by student diversity, women’s and outreach programs, includes refreshments.
