  • Board members and staff of the Meramec Regional Planning Commission (MRPC) traveled to Jefferson City Jan. 29 to spend the day talking to legislators about issues important to the area as part of the organization’s annual Day at the Capitol.
The group met with 11 of the 13 legislators who represent portions of the eight-county Meramec region. Each legislator was given a copy of MRPC’s 2013 state priorities, which contains 18 issues and was created through a survey of MRPC board members.
State-level priorities set by the MRPC board for 2013 include making portions of Highways 63 and 50 four lanes; actively working to protect, maintain and expand Fort Leonard Wood; supporting legislation allowing school districts and other governmental bodies to join state employee pools for health care; opposing pre-filed legislation that would eliminate solid waste districts; requesting that legislators ensure rural areas receive a fair share in education dollars; and supporting full funding for state mandates on local governments.
Area legislators who participated in the event include District 16 Sen. Dan Brown, who helped organize the event; District 6 Sen. Mike Kehoe; District 3 Sen. Gary Romines; District 143 Rep. Jeff Pogue; District 122 Rep. Steve Lynch; District 118 Rep. Ben Harris; District 62 Rep. Tom Hurst; District 150 Rep. and Speaker Pro Tem Jason Smith; District 144 Rep. Paul Fitzwater; District 142 Rep. Robert Ross; and District 61 Rep. Dave Schatz.
