Goal: 700 or fewer fatalities by 2016

In Phelps County, in the past three years, there have been 33 fatal crashes — 19 in 2012, 10 in 2011 and four in 2010.

There have also been 129 disabling injuries in crashes in the county in the last three years — 52 in 2012 and 39 each in 2011 and 2010.

Between 2010-12, there have been 20 fatalities in the county involving run-off-road crashes, with 10 of those in 2012.

During those same years, there have been 18 fatalities involving horizontal curves, with half of those occurring in 2012.

There have been 16 fatalities in that time span involving aggressive driving, which refers to following too close, exceeding the speed limit or driving too fast for conditions. Eight of those fatalities occurred in 2012 crashes.

There were 10 fatalities involving alcohol and/or other drugs in the last three years, with six of those happening in 2012.

There were eight fatalities involving crashes into trees between 2010-12, with four of those occurring last year.

In that time frame, there were four fatalities involving head-on crashes, with two of those happening in 2012. One of those was on I-44.

Over the last three years, there were three fatalities involving inattentive drivers, one of those occurring in 2012.
