Muriel E. Hatfield, of Rolla, passed away Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at the age of 93.
She was born in 1919 in Richmond, VA to Leland Jerome Powell and Mabel (Richards) Powell. In 1943, she married Charles Hatfield and they were married for 50 years until he preceded her in death in 1993.
Muriel spent many years as the organist and choir director at the Presbyterian church in Rolla. She and her husband owned the Logos Bookstore in Rolla on Pine Street for years 1978 – 1985, and she was the music and gift buyer there. Muriel was the past president of the Rolla Musical Teachers Association. She spent her life teaching piano and was teaching until 2008 in Rolla.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by her brother, Byron Powell; her sister, Margaret Browne; and her granddaughter, Amy Watkins.
Muriel will be greatly missed by her surviving family which includes: her brother, Donald Powell of Burr Ridge, IL; her daughters, Margaret Tafoya and husband John of Chesterfield, MO, Judith A. Gehm and husband Lawrence of Roeland Park, KS, and Melinda McMahon and husband Gregory of Durham, NH; and three grandchildren, David Watkins, Megan Bendiksen and Trevor McMahon.
A graveside service for Muriel Hatfield will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Friday, February 1, 2013 at the Rolla City Cemetery. A visitation for family and friends will be held prior to the service beginning at 1 p.m. at the Null and Son Funeral Home in Rolla.
