More facilities improvements are planned at Rolla High School, and February will be a time to get the figures together.

School officials will seek bids on an expansion project for the school cafeteria with the goal of making that happen during the summer.

They’ll also ask contractors to bid on the installation of synthetic turf and several other enhancements at Lions Memorial Stadium. No construction timeline has been released on this project.

Two phases of the cafeteria renovation project are planned. Assistant Superintendent Kelly Hinshaw earlier this month presented the Rolla Board of Education with the goals for those two time periods.

For the summer of 2013, the plan is to “Update and expand the cafeteria facility to serve students more efficiently while addressing supervision and safety concerns.”

For the first phase, the 2013 phase, bid documents are set to be issued on Feb. 14

A prebid meeting with contractors will be held at 9 a.m. Feb. 28 at the high school, and the bids are due at 2 p.m. March 12.

The board will consider those bids at the March 14 meeting.

Construction would begin at the end of May after the semester ends and would be completed Aug. 1.

That will be followed up in the summer of 2014 with this plan: “Upgrade the kitchen equipment, loading dock, and improve work space for food preparation.”

No timeline has been released for next year’s phase.

For the Lions Memorial Stadium project, the finalized bid documents will be released to contractors Feb. 4.

Projected date to review those bids is Feb. 25.

Those bids could be accepted or rejected within 60 days of the bid opening.

The board would decide whether to go ahead with the project or hold off once the financial information is available.

Consultants assisting in this process are: Archer Elgin Surveying and Anderson & Associates, both of Rolla, and ATG Sports, St. Louis.

“The base bid would include all items required for installation of synthetic turf on the main field at Lions Memorial Stadium,” Hinshaw said.

Alternate bids would include “at a minimum” the following items:

Center logo

End zone letters

Sideline logos

Carpet weight upgrade

Flexible goal post

North end zone netting

Retaining wall and bleacher relocation

Additional seating

Turf practice area.

The “Turf by 12” campaign has raised several thousands of dollars in pledges for the synthetic turf project, although not the entire amount.

The school board at an earlier meeting voted to seek bids on the turf project to have a firmer figure on what such a project would cost.
