  • When law enforcement officers report to work at the beginning of each shift, they never know what they are going to face over the course of the day.  The odds are Phelps County Sheriff’s Deputy John Scott didn’t expect to be delivering a baby on the side of one of the busiest highways in Missouri, but he did just that.
Near the start of Scott’s shift Saturday morning, he got a call to assist a woman in labor in Interstate 44 near the 179 mile marker.
“When I arrived the car was on the side of the road and the soon to be father was outside the vehicle, pacing and panic stricken,” said Scott. “Who could blame him?”
The soon to be mother was seated on the passenger side front seat, going into heavy labor amidst traffic and cold weather.
“The couple was on their way to the Phelps County Regional Hospital but things happened a little bit quicker than expected,” said Scott.
Scott said the baby’s head was crowning when he began to assist, and after some mild pushing, a baby girl was born at about 7:15 a.m.
A short time later, paramedics from the Phelps County Regional Medical Center arrived on scene, and took the mother and daughter to the hospital. Both are in good condition.
The deputy credits his training as a paramedic, his police training, the assistance of a Doolittle officer and another Phelps County deputy.
He also said his ability to stay calm was a help. He added he will be forever changed by this experience.
“In policing you see a lot of negative things,” said Scott. “When you see a baby take its first breath, it just kind of renews you faith a little.”
