Auditions for Rolla’s dancing talent show are Feb. 9
Do you think you have the right dance moves?
If so, you have the chance to prove it at a local dancing talent show based off the popular TV show, “So You Think You Can Dance.”
For the third consecutive year, the Ozark Actors Theatre (OAT) will present “So You Think You Can Dance: Rolla Edition.”
This year’s event will take place Saturday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m. at the Cedar Street Playhouse, 701 N. Cedar St., Rolla.
For those who would like to take part in the dancing talent show, auditions will be held Saturday, Feb. 9, from 1-4 p.m. at AndFlew! Studios, located at 717 N. Pine St., Rolla.
Dancers of all styles, ages and levels are welcome to audition, according to Gessell Frisbee, an OAT board member and owner of AndFlew! Studios.
“Some people think you have be a professional dancer, but you don’t have to,” she said, noting that anybody can audition “if you’re willing to get up there and have fun.”
The dancing talent show is a fundraiser for OAT, Frisbee said. The first event was held in 2011 and has been sold out ever since.
“We needed another fundraiser for the winter season and I came up with this idea,” Frisbee said. “I'm a dancer and own AndFlew! Studios, so it’s what I do. It was just a natural fit.”
Past performances have included ballet, jazz, hip hop, swing dancing, clogging, ballroom and line dancing among other types of dances.
Most of the dancers who have performed in past events are from Rolla, but a few came from Jefferson City and Springfield, Frisbee said.
There will be a youth division and an adult division. Past prizes have included trophies for the top three winners in each division as well as choreography awards and judges’ choice awards. Additionally, there will be other prizes donated by businesses.
Fifty percent of points are assigned by the judges, and 50 percent will come from the audience, so performers are encouraged to bring their friends and families to support them. The judges will provide feedback for each of the performers.
This year’s judges, who all have a background in dance/performing arts, will be Hannah Bagnall, of Rolla, Carla Williams, of Springfield, and Susana Bose, of Jefferson City.
