The South Central Missouri Literacy Council plans to host a tutor training for new volunteer tutors Feb. 27 from 9 a.m.-noon at the Phelps County Courthouse in the Multipurpose Room.
Tutors will receive training to work with adults who enroll in the Rolla Adult Education and Literacy Program. Tutors may volunteer to assist class site teachers in Rolla, St. James, Belle, Salem, Cuba, or Steelville, or working one-to-one with literacy level students who need help outside the classroom setting. Tutors may also choose to assist with the English Language classes at the beginner, intermediate, or advanced levels.
During the summer, tutors may be placed with English language students who wish to continue learning English after classes end in April. Volunteers may work in small groups or one-to-one. Volunteer tutors are also needed from time to time to work with students who need help with basic math. You may state your preference for tutoring assignments the day of the training.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer tutor for the Rolla Adult Education and Literacy Program, please contact Jackie at 458-0101, Ext. 15149 for more information.
Rolla Adult Education and Literacy provides free instruction to adults 17 or older who need to improve basic reading, writing and math skills, need to prepare to take the GED exam, or want to learn to speak English. Adults who need to brush up on basic skills before entering post-secondary education may also attend these classes.
