In light of the school shooting in Newtown Connecticut, the Rolla Police Department and the Rolla Public School System entered into discussions over the past few weeks, concerning student safety in our schools. Even though there are emergency plans in place, we decided to take a closer look at those plans to decide whether to continue on as we have or look at different options.
These discussions will include not only school staff and law enforcement, but many other entities such as Emergency Medical Services, Fire and Rescue, Public Works and many other support agencies. These talks will continue until the best plans and ideas are decided upon and put into place. We will keep you posted on the progress.
Of course when you mention school shootings, the next issue to come to light seems to always be gun control. As you know this can be a very controversial issue with mixed opinions and emotions. I decided to see what the consensus was in our community concerning gun control and placed a posting on our Rolla Police Department’s Facebook site.
Here is the posting: I would like to get your opinion on gun control. 1. Leave it the way it is. 2. Loosen control. 3. Make it stricter. 4. Take the guns from everyone but the government. I sent the same questions to our officers here at the police department and will post their responses in the near future.
This next entry is from the desk of Det. Derrick Dillon concerning a citizen’s complaint. Derrick writes: On January 15th, 2013 the Rolla Police Department received two separate reports from concerned citizens stating they received suspicious telephone calls.
One citizen reported she received a call from a male subject stating he was working with the Rolla Police Department and wanted to install a sign in her yard. She was concerned the call was some type of scam. She did the right thing and contacted the Rolla Police Department. An investigation was initiated by Sgt. Martens where he learned that two employees from the Rolla Police Department received the same type of call.
It was quickly determined the calls were automated recordings from a batch dial telephone marketing system. Sgt. Martens later confirmed with the original callers that the recording referred to "local police" and not specifically the Rolla Police Department. It is believed at this time that the phone calls are not fraudulent in nature. If you receive a call of this nature, always remember to never give personal and private information such as credit card numbers, addresses, etc. If ever in doubt, feel free to contact us at 573-308-1213. -Det.
