Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) troopers reported three traffic fatalities during the month of December 2012 in the Troop I area, which covers Phelps and five other south central Missouri counties. Two of the three fatalities occurred in Phelps County last month, with the third reported in Crawford County.
In December 2011, there were four fatalities reported in the same area.
The total fatalities for 2012 for Troop I are 39, which is the same number of fatalities as last year.
“Last year troopers investigated crashes that resulted in 39 individuals losing their lives on the roads within the six county Troop I area, said Capt. Lee Ann H. Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I. “Every day our troopers see how speeding, driving while impaired and not paying attention contribute to these crashes. They also see how wearing seat belts reduces the chances of motorists being killed or seriously injured. Please keep these things in mind so that 2013 will be a much safer year.”
In December of 2011, there were 176 reported crashes with 55 people injured in the Troop I area.
In December 2012, troopers in Troop I responded to 176 crashes with 62 injured.
Of that amount reported last month, 46 of those crashes occurred in Phelps County with 14 people reporting injuries.
A breakdown of the number of crashes and reported injuries in the other five counties in the Troop I area are as follows:
Crawford — 27 crashes, nine injured;
Dent — 17 crashes, five injured;
Laclede — 33 crashes, 18 injured;
Maries — 11 crashes, five injured; and
Pulaski — 42 crashes, 11 injured.
