The Missouri Highway Patrol reports that the number of traffic fatalities in Troop I (Phelps County and neighboring counties) was the exact number it was in 2011 – 43.
According to Sgt. Dan Crain, Troop I Public Information and Education Officer, the state reported a total of 32 traffic fatalities in 2010.
Statewide, the number of traffic fatalities were up in 2012, with 823 reported deaths from the 786 reported in 2011. The 2012 number was had also increased slightly from the 821 deaths reported in 2010.
The 2012 figure includes the deaths of St. James high school seniors Nikki L. Stanley, 17, and Alexa M. Bartlett, 18, who were killed Dec. 15 in a car crash on Interstate 44.
According to a recent Troop I press release, there were a total of 17 traffic crashes resulting in seven injuries and no fatalities over the Christmas holidays. State troopers also made seven DWI arrests.
During the New Year's holiday, there were 54 traffic crashes, resulting in 18 arrests and no fatalities.
State troopers made four DWI arrests.
According to a statewide Highway Patrol release, there were eight traffic fatalities reported during the New Year's holiday period, with 486 traffic crashes.
A total of 147 injuries were reported in addition to the fatalities.
During the 2011-2012 New Year's holiday, 777 traffic crashes occurred statewide over the New
Year’s holiday weekend, which included 311 injuries and six fatalities.
Crain said the latest number of fatalities could change if "late deaths occur."
