  • Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) troopers responded to two traffic fatalities last month in the Troop I area, which covers Phelps and five other south central Missouri counties. Both fatal crashes occurred in Phelps County in November.
    Last month’s total is three fewer than the number of fatalities reported in November 2011 in the Troop I area.
    In November of last year, there were 191 reported crashes with 50 people injured in the Troop I area.
    In November 2012, troopers in Troop I responded to 184 crashes with 64 injured.
    Of that amount reported last month, 59 of those crashes occurred in Phelps County with 17 people reporting injuries.
    A breakdown of the number of crashes and reported injuries in the other five counties in the Troop I area is as follows:
    Crawford — 20 crashes, four injured;
    Dent — 15 crashes, seven injured;
    Laclede — 39 crashes, 13 injured;
    Maries — 15 crashes, 12 injured; and
    Pulaski — 36 crashes, 11 injured.
    Capt. Lee Ann H. Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I in Rolla, reminds everyone that frost- and ice-covered windshields are common causes of some traffic crashes this time of year.
    Kenley urges all drivers to properly defrost their windows before driving and to use their headlights on days that are overcast, foggy or snowing. She also reminds everyone to be aware of “black ice” during or after a snow or ice storm.
