  • The Rolla Board of Education has hired Patron Insight, a polling and opinion-surveying company to find out if patrons would be willing to pay a tax to build an early childhood learning center.
Meeting in regular session Dec. 13, the board authorized spending a little over $21,000 for the Kansas company to make telephone calls to school district patrons twice.
"We use research to inform decision-making," said Rick Nobles, president of the Stillwell, Kansas, company.
Nobles explained to the board the telephone calls will be made to 400 people in February or March. The company will call both landline owners and cellular phone users.
The data will have an accuracy rate of plus/minus 5 percent, Nobles said.
The telephone surveyors will find out what information sources the district patrons use, how interested they are in school affairs; whether they think the board is doing a good job with tax money and whether they would be willing to pay a tax for the early childhood center.
A second survey will be taken in the fall, Nobles said.
Patron Insight has surveyed the district twice before in 2008 and 2009, Nobles reminded the board.
    In other business or discussion:
    • The board received the attendance report for October. District-wide, the average daily attendance was 95.79 percent.
By school, the attendance rates were: Rolla High School, 94.70 percent; Rolla Junior High School, 95.49 percent; Rolla Middle School, 96.12 percent; Truman Elementary School, 96.42 percent; Wyman Elementary School, 96.63 percent, and Mark Twain Elementary School, 96.13 percent.
    • It was noted that filing for board election opened Dec. 11 and will continue through Jan. 15, 2013, for the April 2, 2013 election. Incumbents Jamie Myers and Jim Packard have both filed.
