  • Teachers and students at Newburg Schools are hoping to make the holiday brighter for children at the Russell House — with a donation of toys.
Jeanine DeLong, second grade teacher at Newburg Elementary School, came up with the idea for the donation but said it was a “collective effort” among teachers and students in the district.
From dolls to toy tractors and trucks, the gifts collected will help out, according to Angie Crews, case manager at the Russell House.
“We have a wish list and when they (children) send out their wish list, a lot of times, we can’t get the exact thing, but this year, they got a lot of what they asked for,” Crews said. “It’s pretty cool.”
Crews said while the Newburg community has helped the Russell House in the past, this is the first time the school has held this type of donation.
DeLong said the donation started just among teachers — if they donated a toy, they were allowed to wear jeans for the month of December.
However, then students got involved and started donating toys, too.
“I think it’s important to teach children to be caring citizens,” DeLong said. “I think it shows we’re a caring community.
“It was a great turnout,” DeLong said, adding that a cash donation from an individual in the Newburg community also was made to the Russell House.
DeLong said the school may try to hold another donation next year, possibly to another group.
