  • With less than two weeks before Christmas, the Rolla Police Department is trying to prove that it’s not too late to help out those in need this holiday season.
After learning that local food banks are in extremely low supply this year, RPD staff decided to do their part in collecting goods for families in need this time of year.
More than 10,000 users like the RPD Facebook page and the RPD is hoping that each fan can bring in one non-perishable item to be donated.
For fans of the page who don’t live in town, if they know of someone from the Rolla area, they can have those individuals bring in an item on their behalf.
Even if not all 10,000-plus fans participate, if half of the fans brought in two items each, the RPD could reach its goal.
Among the items needed are canned goods, dry goods, toilet paper, cat food, dog food, kitty litter and toothpaste among other non-perishable items.
The dog and cat food and supplies will be provided to needy families who have pets.
For about $5, you can supply a food bank with approximately 10 cans of food.
Non-perishable items can be brought to the RPD lobby 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Donations will be accepted until noon Monday, Dec. 17.
People who would like to donate but cannot bring items may contact Detective Derrick Dillon at 573-308-1213 and the department will arrange to have their items picked up.
Dillon said the donations collected at the RPD will be given to Denny Ford, who will distribute to area food pantries.
“We’re using Denny Ford as a reosurce to get the items to the pantries,” Dillon said.
“We have a close-knit family here so when we hear about a need like this, we step up,” said Sgt. Vince Giacolone.
People who donate at the RPD can sign up on a clipboard in the lobby for a chance to win a small giveaway.
Any person who brings in items will be eligible for the drawing.
