The Missouri Department of Transportation will relocate its engineering office in Rolla to St. James by early 2013.
According to MoDOT Area Engineer Preston Kramer, the move should be completed by the end of March.
The St. James facility, which Kramer describes as "essentially a big garage," is currently being renovated for office use. The renovation contract for the St. James facility was approximately $85,000.
"The Rolla facility is a little cramped and a little old, and most importantly, it is not ADA compliant," Kramer said. "We figured we could either fix the Rolla office or convert the garage space in St. James into office space. St. James was the cheaper option."
The MoDOT engineering office in Phelps County handles construction, traffic and right-of-way projects for an eight-county area, Kramer said.
There are currently 17 staff members in the Rolla facility, and Kramer says the move itself will be a team effort.
"After they finish converting the building, myself and the other 16 people are going to move everything to the new building," Kramer said.
Once the office has been relocated, MoDOT will sell the building in Rolla. That money will be applied to the Road and Bridge Program.
The value of the Rolla property had not been appraised as of press time Friday.
