A three-vehicle crash on Interstate 44 in Franklin County killed one truck driver and injured three other people, including a Rolla man, Saturday morning, Dec. 8.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Diaael D. Saker, 25, of Kenner, La., died from injuries suffered in the accident after being transported to Mercy Hospital in Washington, Mo.
The accident occurred on I-44 at the 248.6 mile marker when Saker lost control of a 2012 Kenworth tractor-trailer that was traveling eastbound, causing the vehicle to travel off the north side of the interstate. Saker then overcorrected, causing the tractor trailer to overturn.
A 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by Billy R. Wells, 42, of Rolla, and a 2001 Nissan Sentra driven by Roxanne C. Rath, 25, of Sullivan, which were both traveling eastbound as well, attempted to stop, causing both vehicles to slide into the tractor-trailer.
Rath, who suffered moderate injuries, was transported to Mercy Hospital Washington along with Wells and Felix D. Smith, 51, of Pasadena, Calif., a passenger in the tractor-trailer, who both suffered minor injuries.
Saker, Wells and Rath were also wearing seat belts. Saker was pronounced dead at 5:30 a.m. at the hospital. His body was taken to the St. Louis County morgue.
The tractor-trailer and Nissan were both totaled and the Trailblazer had moderate damage.
The crash was reported at 4:50 a.m. The interstate was fully reopened after 3 p.m. Saturday. A major crash investigation unit team was called into assist the highway patrol.
