As the new year approaches and resolutions are being comtemplated, I find it encouraging that eating healthier food, losing weight and becoming more fit are again among the more popular resolutions for 2013. Who doesn't want to feel better, look better, and enjoy health? The difficult part is doing the things that end in improved fitness and overall health.
If you are one of those promising to yourself to get healthier, I am excited for you. Be warned though - the first few weeks of your new lifestyle can be exciting. You can run on that fresh start feeling and do very, very well. When the novelty wears off and life hits hard - that is when you are truly challenged.
It seems those who do not expect perfection are able to make this a long-term commitment to health a bit easier. They do not waste energy beating themselves up for skipping breakfast one day or taking an extra day off from exercise one week. Because they are able to see the bigger picture, they do not throw in the towel over one hiccup in following the plan. They keep going with setting realistic goals as they progress, adjusting plans and schedules, and taking it one day at a time.
If you want to eat for better health this year, consider eating breakfast every day, plan your meals ahead of time, include a fruit or vegetable at nearly every meal or snack, and eat small, frequent meals rather than 2-3 large meals. A small change can make a big impact over time. I find myself saying these things more often than anything else - they are my most poplular pieces of advice. If you slip into old habits, just pick up where you left off.
