Adults who are thinking about becoming college students can register now for the Academic Boot Camp at the East Central College campus in Rolla.
The free event will be held Wednesday, Dec. 5, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Thursday, Dec. 6, from noon to 4 p.m.
Information on applying for financial aid as well as the services available to ECC students will be presented in an extended session from 2-3 p.m. Dec. 5.
There is no cost to attend and a light breakfast and lunch will be served Dec. 5.
“Academic Boot Camp is geared to adults who have been out of school five years or more,” said Lora Warner, ECC’s retention/career services specialist. “ECC started holding boot camps in 2010 with the intent of giving potential students an overview of what they can expect in making the transition back to the classroom.”
Over the past few years Warner said college officials have seen an increase in the number of adults enrolling at ECC, particularly displaced workers.
“Through Academic Boot Camp we can help these potential students realize what’s involved in balancing college classes with their other commitments,” Warner said.
According to Warner, the program will also help people review their skills in math, English, writing and reading.
“We want to help them prepare for assessment by focusing on their test taking, computer and writing skills,” she said. “By Thursday afternoon, they could be enrolled in college classes.”
Academic Boot Camp is part of the Graduate! St. Louis project which is funded by a grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration.
“For the past two years those grant funds have also allowed us to help many adult students with some of their college expenses,” said Warner.
Since space is limited, adults wanting to participate should call 573-458-0165 or 573-468-8287, extension 15, or email: email@example.com to reserve a spot.
