Mary Ann Lewis of Rolla was named Senior Companion of the Month during the monthly in-service meeting held Nov. 20 at the Phelps County Courthouse. The meeting included a silent auction for the Senior Companions with donated items.
As a Senior Companion, Lewis visits area residents at Parkside Assisted Living Center, reads to them, helps serve water and assists with the hospitality and snacks.
Lewis is a longtime Rolla resident. Before becoming a Senior Companion she worked as a salesperson and department manager at Walmart for 16 years. Lewis is a mother of one child and three grandchildren. In her off time she enjoys flowers, friends and family.
About being a Senior Companion, she says she enjoys everything about the program and being needed and listening to each individual’s story and becoming their friend.
Keeping it in the family, Lewis’s sister Helen Shanks also serves with the Senior Companions program as did Lewis’s late brother George Shivers. As Senior Companion of the Month, she received a floral arrangement donated by Blossom Basket Florist, and the recognition of her fellow Senior Companions.
There are more than 70 senior citizen volunteers serving as Senior Companions all over Phelps County in private homes, residential care facilities, and skilled nursing facilities.
Sponsored by the Phelps County Commission, the Corporation for National and Community Service, as well as several local groups and individuals, Senior Companions’ greatest work is to help their peers maintain the independence they have worked for all their lives.
