  • Eight-year-old Gabriel Cox, of St. James, was watching the news when Superstorm Sandy blew across the East Coast, causing massive destruction along the coastline.
It didn't take this youngster long to run upstairs and start collecting toys to send to the kids who were affected by this natural disaster. He and his mother have already garnered the support of the middle school and countless others through the use of the Internet.
Below are a few questions answered by Gabriel, whose generosity has already inspired so many.
Why do you think helping others is important? Because there are so many kids who don't have what I have and my mommy says its our job to serve those in need.
Why do you feel so strongly about helping the kids affected by the Superstorm? Because it makes me sad that some kids and their mommies and daddies lost everything. My mommy and daddy make sure I have everything I need and it just makes me sad.
If you were standing in a room with a group of kids whose homes were destroyed by Sandy, what would you tell them and why?  I think I would tell them that I'm sorry and that I'm very happy if any of my toys and books made them smile. My mommy has a friend who donated 175 books to be sent to kids that say “From the heart of Michael and Gabriel Cox.” Reading is fun and I think it's really cool that someone might smile when they read that.
What were you thinking when you decided to start this toy drive? That there was another little boy out there just like me who lost his toys and lost his DS and lost his books and I thought it would be awesome if I could help him.
How does it feel to know you are helping so many people? I feel really good about it. My mommy says that when you help others, you fill your own bucket and feel better and good. I didn't really understand that until all of this.
Who is your hero and why? My family. They're all pretty awesome. My brother is really smart, my daddy is really strong, and my mommy is just cool. Also, I really like Chuck Norris.
If you could change the world, what would you change and why? I would like it if people stopped hurting each other. I'd also really like it if I had a chocolate tree.
What do you want to be when you grow up? A daddy
