Missouri University of Science and Technology professor Petra DeWitt was named the 2012 Missouri History Book Award winner at the State Historical Society of Missouri annual meeting on Saturday, Nov. 3, in Columbia.
DeWitt, a professor in the Missouri S&T department of history and political science, is the author of “Degrees of Allegiance: Harassment and Loyalty in Missouri’s German American Community During World War I.”
The award is given annually in recognition of superior original scholarship in a book pertaining to the history of Missouri and its people.
DeWitt’s book, published earlier this year by Ohio University Press, provides a fresh perspective on the experiences of German-Americans in Missouri during World War I and the war’s impact on their culture.
DeWitt’s award was presented by U.S. District Court Judge Stephen N. Limbaugh, Jr., who serves as president of the State Historical Society.
Another trustee of the society is Lawrence O. Christensen, professor emeritus of history at Missouri S&T.
