  • The CTA (Community Teachers Association) at the Newburg R-II School District is recognizing a faculty/staff member every month who goes out of his or her way to make a difference. The CTA finalizes the choice each month and the superintendent and school board then must approve the faculty/staff member.
October winner: Starla Slawson, 46, school nurse
How did you feel about receiving the honor? “I am so honored to be chosen and very honored to be the first one who was picked,” Slawson said, adding that there are a lot of faculty and staff members in the district who deserve the award. As the winner, Slawson gets to park in the employee of the month parking space and a poster of Slawson and her family was placed in the cafeteria.
How long have you worked at Newburg schools? This is her third year with the district. She previously worked at Rolla Public Schools and has been a nurse for 27 years total. She also a graduate of the Newburg School District.
Education: Slawson is a licensed practical nurse and received her nursing education in Waynesville.
What inspired you to go into your position? Slawson said there were three people who she has worked with who “stand out as very good examples and have helped me learn what to do and I appreciate their direction and help. They've made it much easier for me.”
What is your favorite part of your job? Slawson said what she likes most about her job are the children. “I love being a part of taking care of kids. Each one is unique and special. I love all the funny stories they tell me as I care for them in the nurse's office. Her second favorite thing is the clothes closet she oversees, in which donations of gently-used clothes or money to buy clothes are made. The clothes are given to students in need or who have injuries or accidents.
What is something about your job people may not know? “There is a lot of multitasking. It's not just passing out medicines. It's keeping up with immunization records ... any abuse/neglect runs through the nurse's office ... administering insulin to those who are diabetic.” Slawson also handles the nurse's office budget, educates about infection control, oversees the district's health and wellness program, performs biometric screenings for staff and oversees vision and hearing screenings as well as coordinate a health fair every other year with Kindra Atkinson, the superintendent's secretary.
What are some of your hobbies/interests outside of your job? Slawson helps with the PTO at school. “I really enjoy watching basketball and I love to ski and camp and visit the Ozarks,” she said.
