  • Phelps County has launched a free prescription discount card program through a partnership with the National Association of Counties (NACo).
Phelps County Treasurer Carol Green is administering the program for the county and told county commissioners last week that the program has offered about 9,000 discount cards to the county to be distributed.
The prescription discount cards can be used by those who do not have insurance or by those who have prescriptions not covered by insurance. The discount card is not insurance.
In August when commissioners approved a contract for the program, Green said, “We get this benefit because we’re members of NACo and we can pass this down so that it benefits the resident ... We’re hoping to save some people some money.”
There is no cost to the county for this program. The contract approved is for three years and can be continued for one year at a time after that.
Any county resident without prescription coverage can use this program. Even for those who have insurance for prescription drugs, they may still benefit from the discount card, since it may save them money on prescription drugs that are not covered by their existing plan.
The program will provide area residents with a card that has been saving consumers across the country an average of 24 percent off the retail price of prescription medications. Some discounts may be more and some may be less, depending on the medication and quantity purchased.
The free discount cards may be used by all Phelps County residents, regardless of age, income or existing health coverage. The discount cards will be offered at county offices as well as participating pharmacies throughout the county.
There is no enrollment or claim forms, no membership or annual fees to pay and no restrictions or limits on the number of times the card can be used. The prescription discount card is provided to county residents free of charge by the county.
The cards can be used at all pharmacies in Phelps County. Once individuals or families get a card, they can simply present the card at a participating pharmacy when they fill or refill their prescriptions.
Everyone is eligible. As soon as they get the card, it can be used immediately. One card can offer unlimited use for the whole family, meaning that everyone in the family may use the same card, if desired.
The cardholder pays the negotiated discount price or the pharmacy’s retail price, whichever is lower.
Among the other benefits of the card include a safety feature that alerts pharmacists when one medication may have an interaction with another medication the cardholder is taking, if the prescriptions were obtained with the NACo prescription discount card.
Additionally, cardholders can use their prescription discount card anytime they need to purchase a prescription that is not covered by their Medicare prescription plan or any other insurance.
Page 2 of 2 - Another benefit is that if a cardholder’s pet has been prescribed a medication that is also used to treat a human condition, the cardholder may receive a discount on the medication at participating pharmacies.
Also while discounts are not usually available for over-the-counter products and non-prescription medications, discounts are available for many diabetic supplies.
The discount card cannot be used in conjunction with other insurance.
The discount cards can also be printed online at www.nacorx.org. Residents can also locate the nearest participating pharmacy from the same website or call toll-free at 1-877-321-2652 for assistance with the program.
In addition, if an individual’s or family’s card is lost, a replacement card can be obtained at www.nacorx.org or by calling toll-free at 1-877-321-2652. The cards do not list the names of the individual or family.
The NACo prescription discount card program is administered by CVS Caremark.
