Grace Wood formerly of St. James, Missouri passed away October 25, 2012 at the Rolla Manor at the age of 92. Grace was born in Meridian, Mississippi on January 18, 1920 to the late Edward and Edna (Alexander) Bond.
Grace was united in marriage to Austin Wood on January 20, 1940 and to this union one son Jony Austin Wood was born. Grace was very devoted to her family; her husband Austin traveled the country with his band, Austin Wood and his Missouri Swingsters. As successful as he was it was Grace who was always there encouraging him; Austin was legally blind so Grace was his right hand person leading the way.
Grace was a very active member of the First Church of God in St. James, Missouri where she taught Sunday school, organized the church dinners, and sang in the choir; she also worked as a Telephone Operator and a Motel Desk Clerk. Grace lived a full life and was very giving of her time to others, she will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved her.
In addition to her parents Grace was preceded in death by her son, Jony Austin Wood in 1955 and husband Austin Wood in 1967. She leaves to mourn her passing a host of nieces and nephews including Anita and Lee Clover, John Henry Hoffmeister and Harold and Bonnie Hoffmeister, and special friends Vernita Morris and family and June Huster and family.
A private graveside memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the Southard Cemetery or the American Foundation of the Blind, cards are available at all James & Gahr locations.
